Georges Seurat
1859-12-02 - 1891-03-29
Georges Seurat is a French Post-Impressionist painter, brilliant inventor of the pointillist technique (or divisionism) who revolutionizes modern painting through his scientific approach to color and light. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he develops a systematic method based on the optical theories of Chevreul and Rood, applying paint in tiny dots of pure color that optically mix in the viewer's eye to create luminous and vibrant compositions of exceptional chromatic harmony. His monumental masterpiece A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte (1884-1886) synthesizes his pictorial research and presents a frozen and timeless vision of modern Parisian society, where geometricized figures and silent atmosphere create a contemplative meditation on urban life. Dying prematurely at age 31 in 1891, he leaves a limited body of work but of considerable influence on future generations, from Neo-Impressionism to Fauvism and beyond, affirming the possibility of an art that is simultaneously scientific, poetic and profoundly modern.
