Amrita Sher-Gil

Amrita Sher-Gil is an Indo-Hungarian modernist painter, considered one of the most important artists of 20th-century India and pioneer of contemporary Indian art. Her bold and melancholic work, trained in Paris then transformed by her return to India, captures the daily life and dignity of Indian women and villagers with a dark and expressive palette influenced by Gauguin and Mughal miniatures. Tragically deceased at 28, she leaves a revolutionary legacy that reconciles Western modernism and Indian sensibility, paving the way for a new postcolonial artistic identity.
