Henry Ossawa Tanner is an American painter, born on June 21, 1859 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and died on May 25, 1937 in Paris. He is recognized as the first African American artist to achieve international acclaim. Tanner is famous for his depictions of landscapes and biblical themes, and he spent much of his career in France.
