ABOUT
Why we exist, and what we refuse.
There is no neutral advice in art.
We built ARTEDUSA so that, for once, there could be.
THE COLLECTOR'S PREDICAMENT
The global art market exceeds sixty-five billion dollars. Private transactions remain invisible. No public benchmark prevails. Prices are set behind closed doors, and the buyer is rarely the better-informed party.
Almost every advisor in the industry is paid by the seller — a gallery, an auction house, a dealer. Counsel and consignment share the same hand. The recommendation you receive is a function of who pays for it.
Authentication is fragmented across expert committees, catalogues raisonnés, and scientific laboratories. These competences exist, but rarely converge in the collector's interest. Each verification is a separate negotiation.
Patrimonial transmission is impossible to manage alone. A single artwork crosses fiscal regimes, jurisdictions, holding structures (trusts, foundations), succession laws. No single counsel covers it all; no single curator masters the fiscality.
Generative AI, NFTs and purely speculative art have polluted the signal. The serious collector now spends more time filtering than composing. The market that once rewarded discernment now rewards noise tolerance.
A NOTE FROM THE FOUNDERS
We are collectors. We have been on the wrong end of every asymmetry described above — the price we discovered too late, the provenance we accepted on trust, the dossier no one would read for us without a stake in the outcome. We built ARTEDUSA because no one else would.
We refuse the role of intermediary that takes from both sides. We will never be paid by the seller, and we will never accept a kickback to recommend. The fee comes from you, or it does not come at all. This is not a marketing position; it is the only structure under which this advice can be honest.
The advisor will sometimes refuse a mandate. It will sometimes return a verdict of pass. It will sometimes spend three weeks on a dossier and conclude that the work cannot be safely acquired. That refusal is the service. A recommendation that cannot also be a refusal is not a recommendation — it is a sales pitch.
We have built the advisor we wanted ourselves. If it serves you, it will be because it serves no one else.
— The founders, ARTEDUSA
OUR STANDARDS
On independence. We accept no finder's fee, no kickback, no referral commission, no placement payment. Galleries that publish on the ARTEDUSA marketplace cannot purchase visibility, recommendation, or favourable verdict. Our verdicts are blind to subscription status. The collector's invoice is the only line of revenue that touches the advisory.
On scholarship. Authentication is not a search; it is a discipline. Catalogues raisonnés, expert committees, scientific forensics — each takes time, costs money, and sometimes returns inconclusive results. We honour the time. When a dossier requires three months, it takes three months. When a comité d'expertise refuses to attribute, we report the refusal. We do not finesse what cannot be confirmed.
On confidentiality. NDA stands before any document is exchanged. Your collection is never aggregated, syndicated, or referenced externally. The advisor reads what you give it; nothing leaves the perimeter. Discretion is not a service we provide — it is the condition under which the work is possible.
On time. We compose for transmission, not turnover. The horizon is decades and generations, not seasons and exits. A patrimony is not built in a year, and the works that appreciate over fifty years are rarely the works the market is celebrating today. The advisor is calibrated for the long arc.
WHAT WE WILL NEVER DO
- We will never accept a finder's fee, kickback, or referral commission from a seller.
- We will never recommend a work whose authentication or provenance we cannot independently establish.
- We will never sell, share, syndicate, or aggregate your collection data.
- We will never display AI-generated art or NFTs in a dossier delivered under our name.
- We will never substitute volume for verdict — when we cannot conclude, we say so.
- We will never accept a mandate we cannot honour to museum-grade standard.
