Its horseshoe shape, inherited from the Visigoths of Spain, symbolized an opening toward the divine. Andalusian craftsmen pushed this art to its peak in the Great Mosque of Córdoba, where forests of bicolored arches—alternating red brick and white stone—create a hypnotic effect, as if space itself multiplied infinitely. Later, the muqarnas, those stalactites of stucco or carved wood, transformed vaults into true starry skies, where each cell captures light and fragments it into a thousand shards.
In Asia, the arch took on more refined forms, but no less laden with meaning. The Japanese torii, those vermilion gateways marking the entrance to Shinto shrines, are not mere doors: they are thresholds between the human world and that of the kami, the spirits of nature. Their inverted "pi" shape, often devoid of ornamentation, embodies simplicity and harmony with the environment. In Kyoto, the floating torii of Miyajima, planted in the waters of the bay, seems to defy the laws of physics. At high tide, it creates the illusion of floating, like a celestial arch resting on the waves.
Even in pre-Columbian cultures, where architecture was often rectilinear, traces of this fascination with curves can be found. The Maya, for example, used corbelled vaults for their temples, as in the Palace of Palenque. This biomimetic approach influenced an entire generation of architects. This digital revolution has also changed our relationship with the arch in domestic spaces. Today, interior designers are rediscovering the charm of vaulted passages, no longer as structural elements but as zoning tools. In a New York loft or a Parisian apartment, a plaster or wooden arch can define a dining area without closing off the space. In Dubai, luxury villas incorporate blown-glass arches that play with desert light like giant prisms.
Even materials have evolved. Reinforced concrete, once reserved for infrastructure, has become lightweight and translucent. Carbon fiber arches, used in aeronautics, are beginning to appear in bold architectural projects. And tomorrow? In a Parisian apartment, a plaster arch can soften the angle of a hallway, creating a fluid transition between the living room and kitchen. In New York, designers like Studio KO use exposed brick vaults to evoke the industrial architecture of lofts while adding a touch of warmth.
The secret? Playing with proportions and materials. An arch that’s too wide can overwhelm a small space, while a narrow vault, like those in Andalusian houses, adds a touch of mystery. Materials, too, tell a story: raw wood evokes the countryside, polished marble recalls Italian palaces, while polished concrete gives a contemporary touch.
For those hesitant to take the plunge, prefabricated arches offer a turnkey solution. Brands like Archways & Ceilings provide models in polystyrene or plaster, lightweight and easy to install. But beware: a poorly integrated arch can create an artificial "theme" effect. The ideal is to draw inspiration from local architecture—a pointed vault for a Gothic interior, a semicircular arch for a Mediterranean style.
And if space is limited? Arches aren’t just for large volumes. A vaulted niche in a wall can house a bookshelf or a reading nook. A pointed-arch door, even narrow, transforms a simple passage into an invitation to travel. As the architect Louis Kahn said: "A room must have a soul. An arch, however, must have a breath."
07Tomorrow, living arches?
What will the arches of the future look like? Architects are already exploring bold avenues. Some imagine vaults made of biodegradable materials, capable of growing and regenerating like living organisms. Others are working on "breathing" structures, whose forms adapt to climatic conditions—closing to retain heat, opening to let in light.
Advances in 3D printing could also revolutionize construction. Projects like that of Italian architect Enrico Dini, who developed a printer capable of building structures from sand and mineral binder, hint at arches with shapes impossible to achieve with traditional methods. Imagine a vault inspired by fractals, where every curve subdivides infinitely, like the branches of a tree.
But the real innovation may come from our relationship with space itself. With augmented reality, arches could become interfaces between the physical and digital worlds.
