For Vantongerloo was much more than a follower: a visionary who dared to believe that art could be written in equations, that beauty was born of exactitude, and that sculpture, finally freed from the figurative, would become the very language of space. His work, at once rigorous and poetic, poses a dizzying question: what if the greatest aesthetic emotions arose not from chance, but from numbers?
01The soldier who refused the war of forms
The first time Georges Vantongerloo encountered violence, it was not in the trenches, but in a classroom at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. The year was 1905, and the nineteen-year-old, son of a Flemish cabinetmaker, clashed with the stifling academicism of his teachers. They taught him perspective, drapery, the rosy flesh of nudes—everything he would soon despise. "Art must imitate nature," they repeated. Vantongerloo, however, dreamed of something else: a painting that would represent nothing, yet be everything. A painting where lines would not describe a tree, but the very idea of growth.
The war of 1914–1918 shattered this quest. Enlisted in the Belgian army, Vantongerloo survived the mustard gas of Flanders, but emerged forever marked. His weakened lungs condemned him to a life of convalescence, while his mind sharpened. In the military hospitals where he recovered, he encountered broken men, ravaged landscapes. How, after that, could one continue to paint still lifes or bourgeois portraits? Europe lay in ruins, and art with it. Everything had to be rebuilt—but on what foundations?
It was in this context that De Stijl was born. In 1917, as the guns fell silent, Vantongerloo joined Theo van Doesburg and Piet Mondrian in a radical artistic adventure. Their manifesto, published in the movement’s eponymous journal, rang like a call to order: "We declare that art must be pure, universal, and founded on mathematical laws." For Vantongerloo, these words were a revelation. At last, an aesthetic that did not lie. At last, forms that did not betray. In his paintings of the time, like Composition in the Square (1919), black lines intersected with surgical precision, while flat areas of red, blue, and yellow vibrated like musical notes. But unlike Mondrian, who adhered to absolute orthogonality, Vantongerloo introduced curves and diagonals—as if he already refused to be confined by dogma, even a revolutionary one.
02Sculpture, or the art of giving body to numbers
Had Vantongerloo been only a painter, his name might have remained confined to art history books. But it was in the third dimension that his genius fully expressed itself. From the early 1920s, he gradually abandoned canvases for plaster, wood, then metal. Why this shift to sculpture? Because, as he explained in his notebooks, "painting is an illusion of space, whereas sculpture is space." And this space, he intended to structure according to principles as rigorous as those governing the universe.
Take Construction in the Sphere (1924), one of his earliest three-dimensional works. At first glance, it resembles a Calder mobile before its time, or a futurist architect’s model. But look closer: the volumes interlock according to calculated proportions, the angles respond to precise geometric ratios. Vantongerloo does not "compose" in the traditional sense—he solves a spatial equation. Each element is both autonomous and linked to the others, like the atoms of a molecule. And this molecule, he wanted it to be perfect, universal, capable of withstanding time and fashion alike.
What strikes one in these sculptures is their austere yet sensual character. The smooth surfaces of plaster or polished metal reflect light like mirrors, while the sharp edges cast crisp, almost aggressive shadows. They seem like objects from another world, at once familiar and alien. Indeed, have they not been compared to scientific instruments, to machine parts? Vantongerloo found it amusing: "If my sculptures resemble devices, it is because art and science seek the same thing: truth."
03The laboratory-studio: when the artist becomes an engineer
Step into Vantongerloo’s Paris studio in the 1930s, and you enter a place where art and science merge. The walls are covered with sketches, mathematical formulas, architectural plans. On the workbench, carpenter’s tools sit alongside compasses, slide rules, and set squares. The artist, dressed in a work coat stained with paint and grease, looks more like an engineer than a bohemian painter. Moreover, he collaborates with industrialists, foundry workers, mechanics. For him, artistic creation is not a solitary act, but a collective, almost industrial endeavor.
It was in this context that he developed his Equations for a Sculpture. The idea was revolutionary: instead of modeling a form intuitively, he started with an algebraic formula (X = A + B + C, for example) and derived the dimensions and relationships between the elements from it. The result? Modular, reconfigurable works, where each piece could be assembled in multiple ways. Some critics saw in it a forerunner of conceptual art; others, a metaphor for the flexibility of the modern world.

In 1950, he even proposed a project for a light sculpture—an immaterial work made of prisms and mirrors, preceding James Turrell’s installations by decades. The project never came to fruition, but it testified to an outsized ambition: to make art the very language of the universe.
04Metal and mystery: when abstraction becomes spiritual
Yet to reduce Vantongerloo’s work to a mere mathematical demonstration would be a mistake. For behind the apparent coldness of his equations lies a much deeper quest: that of a universal harmony, almost mystical. Like Mondrian or Kandinsky, he was influenced by theosophy, that spiritual current seeking to uncover the hidden laws of the universe. In his writings, he spoke of "the soul of forms," "the energy of lines," "the music of the spheres." His sculptures, he said, were not objects, but manifestations—fragments of a cosmic order that the artist was tasked with revealing.
Take Cosmic Composition (1957), one of his last works. In colored plexiglass and metal, it resembles a model of a galaxy or an enlarged atomic structure. The transparent rods capture light and diffract it into miniature rainbows, while the metallic elements cast shifting shadows on the walls. The work seems alive, almost organic. And that is precisely what Vantongerloo sought: an abstraction that did not deny nature, but revealed its mathematical essence. "Beauty," he wrote, "is an equation the heart understands before reason."
This spiritual dimension perhaps explains why his work, so rigorous in appearance, touches on a form of poetry. His sculptures do not merely occupy space—they transfigure it. In an exhibition, they seem to attract light, alter perspectives, create optical illusions. Visitors who approach them often feel a strange emotion, as if they had brushed against a secret truth. And that may be Vantongerloo’s greatest paradox: this artist who wanted to rationalize everything ended up creating works that speak directly to the soul.
05The invisible legacy: when numbers sculpt the future
Georges Vantongerloo died in 1965, in relative obscurity. His contemporaries often saw him as a marginal figure, a dreamer too rigorous for the Surrealists, too spiritual for the Constructivists. Yet his influence is everywhere—even where one least expects it.
In the 1960s, American Minimalists, from Donald Judd to Sol LeWitt, rediscovered his modular sculptures and equations. Judd, in particular, drew inspiration from his way of treating space as a measurable, almost architectural entity. "Vantongerloo," he wrote, "showed that art could be both conceptual and sensual." Later, digital artists, from Manfred Mohr to Casey Reas, saw in him a precursor to algorithmic art. His notebooks, filled with mathematical formulas, uncannily resemble the lines of code in contemporary image generators.
But Vantongerloo’s most surprising legacy may lie in our daily lives. His ideas on modularity and reconfigurable systems influenced industrial design, from IKEA furniture to prefabricated buildings. When you assemble a Billy bookshelf or move into an apartment with movable partitions, you are living, unknowingly, in Vantongerloo’s spatial utopia. Even the interfaces of our smartphones, with their grids of icons and drop-down menus, owe something to the man who wanted to organize the world according to mathematical laws.
06The work that chooses you
Today, Vantongerloo’s sculptures stand in the world’s greatest museums: the MoMA in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Tate Modern in London. Yet they remain unknown to the general public. Why? Perhaps because they do not yield easily. You must approach them, walk around them, observe them from different angles to grasp their magic. They do not tell stories, do not depict characters, do not provoke immediate emotions. They simply exist—like equations waiting to be solved.
And that is their strength. In a world saturated with images, messages, and stimuli, Vantongerloo’s works offer a rare experience: that of silence. Not empty silence, but the silence that precedes revelation. The one that allows you, at last, to hear the music of the spheres.
Perhaps that is why those who love them love them so passionately. Because they do not impose themselves. They let themselves be discovered, like a secret kept too long. And when, at last, you understand—when you see, behind the polished steel and right angles, the equation that unites all things—then the work has chosen you. It no longer belongs to you. You belong to it.
