01Leonardo’s secret laboratory: when painting became alchemy
In Leonardo da Vinci’s Milanese workshop, the acrid scent of vitriol mingles with the fumes of turpentine. On a walnut table, earthenware crucibles stand beside vials of sublimated mercury, while an assistant grinds pigments in a marble mortar. Leonardo, sleeves rolled up, watches a failed experiment: a preparation meant to yield a deep blue has turned grayish. "The peacock’s tail eludes us still," he murmurs, jotting down the recipe in his notebook—backward, as was his habit.
It is no coincidence that The Last Supper, painted just steps away in the refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie, resembles a full-scale alchemical protocol. The table, arranged like a crucible, hosts twelve apostles whose gestures and expressions correspond to the twelve stages of the Great Work. Judas, isolated on the left, embodies the Nigredo—that necessary phase of putrefaction before any rebirth. The spilled salt before him is not merely a realistic detail: in alchemical language, it symbolizes purification, but also betrayal, as if Leonardo had sought to link Christ’s fate to that of matter in transmutation.
The pigments themselves tell of this quest. Smalt blue, obtained by grinding cobalt glass, was reputed for its "spiritual" properties—alchemists associated it with Saturnine melancholy, that black humor which, according to Marsilio Ficino, nurtured genius. As for vermilion, that vivid red derived from mercury sulfide, it evoked the Rubedo, the culmination of the process, when the philosopher’s stone, at last obtained, could transmute base metals into gold.
But it is in Saint John the Baptist, now in the Louvre, that Leonardo pushes this fusion of art and alchemy furthest. The sfumato, that technique of glazing which lends the face a nearly vaporous appearance, is not just a pictorial tour de force. It evokes sublimatio, that stage where matter transforms into spirit, where the body dissolves into light. The Baptist’s finger, pointing heavenward, designates not so much Christ as it indicates the path of spiritual ascent—the magnum opus every alchemist, whether painter or scholar, sought to achieve.
02Bosch and the theater of metamorphoses: when hell was a chemistry lesson
If Leonardo saw alchemy as a science, Hieronymus Bosch turned it into spectacle. His Garden of Earthly Delights, that triptych of candy-colored hues and monstrous creatures, is often read as an allegory of sin. Yet when viewed through the alchemical lens, another interpretation emerges: that of an illustrated manual of the Great Work, where each panel corresponds to a stage of transformation.
The left panel, depicting Paradise, shows a fountain of life shaped like a vas hermeticum—that sealed vessel where alchemical operations unfolded. The tree of knowledge, often identified as a fig tree, might well be an arbor philosophica, symbol of spiritual growth. As for the owl perched in the fountain, it embodies nocturnal wisdom, that secret knowledge accessible only to the initiated.
At the center, the panel of delights becomes an open-air laboratory. The giant fruits, multicolored birds, and couples entwined in glass bubbles are not mere erotic fantasies. They illustrate multiplicatio, that phase where the philosopher’s stone, once obtained, could multiply infinitely. Alchemists described this stage as a "feast of the senses," where matter, finally purified, revealed its true nature. Bosch, for his part, turns it into a visual bacchanal, where every detail—from cherries to strawberries, flying fish to unicorns—corresponds to a precise symbol from the Rosarium Philosophorum, a fourteenth-century alchemical treatise.
The right panel plunges the viewer into a hell that uncannily resembles a burning alchemist’s workshop. The instruments of torture—shattered alembics, molten crucibles—evoke the failures of putrefactio, that necessary but perilous decomposition. The musician crucified on a harp is none other than Mercurius, the vital principle of alchemy, here punished for attempting to escape the cycle of transformation.
Bosch, a member of the Brotherhood of Our Lady, was no heretic. But by weaving these symbols into works commissioned by nobles and ecclesiastics, he played with fire. His genius lay in transforming alchemy into an acceptable moral allegory—a way of saying that salvation, like the philosopher’s stone, could only be won through long and painful purification.
03Arcimboldo, or the art of visual transmutation
In Prague, under Rudolf II’s reign, alchemy was not merely a science: it was a fashion, an obsession, almost a state religion. In this context, Giuseppe Arcimboldo invented a new genre—the composite portrait—which was nothing less than a visual demonstration of alchemical principles.
His Four Seasons, now in the Louvre, are the most accomplished example. Each season corresponds to a stage of the Great Work: Winter, with its gnarled trunk and mushrooms, embodies the Nigredo; Spring, made of flowers and buds, represents the Albedo; Summer, with its golden wheat, evokes the Citrinitas; and Autumn, laden with grapes and russet leaves, symbolizes the Rubedo. But it is in the details that the true message lies. Pomegranates, for instance, were no random choice: their red rind and myriad seeds made them, for alchemists, a symbol of coagulatio, that stage where liquid matter solidifies into the philosopher’s stone.
Rudolf II, who possessed one of Europe’s richest collections of alchemical objects, adored these intellectual games. He hosted "alchemical evenings" where courtiers had to decipher the hidden symbols in Arcimboldo’s paintings. The Librarian, that portrait composed of stacked books, was one of his favorites. To the initiated, it represented not a scholar but a vas hermeticum—that sealed vessel where secret operations took place. The books, with their illegible titles, evoked the materia prima, that formless matter the alchemist had to purify.
But Arcimboldo did not merely entertain. Some of his works served as coded messages. It is said that The Gardener, that portrait composed of vegetables, was sent to Emperor Maximilian II as a secret letter. The carrots, turnips, and cabbages formed an alchemical rebus that only the recipient could decipher—a way to bypass the Habsburgs’ censorship, ever suspicious of occult sciences.
04The alchemists’ palette: when colors told secrets
In Leonardo’s workshop, a vial of smalt blue sits beside a pot of vermilion. These pigments, which we now associate with mere aesthetics, were for Renaissance artists living substances, laden with symbolism and danger.
Blue, obtained by grinding cobalt glass, was the most mysterious. Alchemists linked it to Saturn, that melancholic planet governing artists and scholars. When Dürer used it in Melencolia I, he did not choose the color by chance: it was meant to evoke the black humor, that Nigredo essential to all creation. But blue came at a price. Toxic, it caused headaches and hallucinations—some saw in this a proof of its spiritual power.
Red, meanwhile, was the color of Rubedo, the completion of the Great Work. Vermilion, derived from mercury sulfide, was so precious it was called "dragon’s blood." Leonardo scattered it across The Virgin of the Rocks, as if inscribing the secret of transmutation into the canvas. Yet this pigment was also unstable: over time, it darkened, as if matter refused to remain fixed in its perfect form.
White, finally, embodied the Albedo, that phase of purification where matter, cleansed of impurities, regained its original brilliance. Artists obtained it by grinding calcined bones or eggshells—a metaphor for alchemy itself, since these substances symbolized rebirth. When Botticelli painted Venus’s robe in The Birth of Venus, he used a lead white so pure it seemed to radiate from within. To the initiated, this light was not merely a pictorial effect: it evoked spiritual illumination, that moment when the soul, finally purified, attained knowledge.
But these colors were not just symbols. They were also technical challenges. Leonardo experimented with binders made of linseed oil and beeswax to create translucent glazes, mimicking alchemical sublimatio. Bosch, for his part, layered oil paints to give his bubbles and fruits a nearly liquid appearance—as if matter were in perpetual transformation.
05Leonardo’s notebooks: when the artist played the sorcerer’s apprentice
In a notebook held at the Bibliothèque nationale de France, Leonardo da Vinci scribbled an enigmatic recipe: "Take mercury, sulfur, and salt, cook them in a sealed vessel until they become a red powder." This is not a classic alchemical formula, but Leonardo’s own attempt to create a revolutionary pigment—perhaps that "perfect red" he sought for his draperies.
These notebooks, written in mirror script and riddled with codes, reveal a Leonardo far removed from the image of the universal genius. Here, he is an obsessive experimenter, willing to risk his health to unlock the secrets of matter. In the Codex Leicester, he describes experiments with light and water that uncannily resemble alchemical protocols. "Light is the soul of the world," he writes—a phrase that could have appeared in a Hermetic treatise.
But Leonardo was not alone in playing with fire. In Nuremberg, Albrecht Dürer conducted his own research. In Melencolia I, he included a magic square—a grid of numbers where every row, column, and diagonal sums to the same total. This square, the first known in the West, contains the work’s creation date (1514) and the artist’s initials, "AD." For alchemists, numbers were keys: 1514 could be broken down into 1+5+1+4=11, the sacred number of knowledge.
These experiments were not without danger. Leonardo once noted: "Sublimated mercury is a subtle poison that penetrates the bones." Dürer, for his part, suffered lifelong kidney problems, likely from exposure to toxic pigments. Yet neither gave up. For them, art and alchemy were not separate disciplines, but two facets of the same quest: to understand the invisible laws governing the world.
06Rudolf II’s cabinet: when art became a princely grimoire
In the 1590s, Prague was the secret capital of European alchemy. Rudolf II, Holy Roman Emperor, had gathered a court of scholars, astrologers, and artists, all united by a single obsession: to unravel the mysteries of matter and spirit.
His cabinet of curiosities, now dispersed, was a veritable temple of Hermeticism. There one found petrified corals (symbols of coagulatio), unicorn horns (actually narwhal tusks, said to neutralize poisons), and Arcimboldo’s paintings where every fruit and vegetable concealed a message. Rudolf also collected alchemical manuscripts, like the Splendor Solis, a sixteenth-century treatise illustrated with miniatures that uncannily resemble Bosch’s works.
But the jewel of his collection was undoubtedly the Cup of Rudolf II, a silver and gemstone object crafted by Prague goldsmiths. This lotus-shaped cup was said to contain the philosopher’s stone—or at least its symbolic representation. The court’s alchemists saw in it an allegory of the vas hermeticum, that sealed vessel where transmutation occurred. Artists, for their part, drew inspiration from it to create works where gold and gems became metaphors for spiritual perfection.
Rudolf did not merely collect. He funded experiments, some dangerous. It is said he locked an alchemist named Edward Kelley in a tower, tasked with producing gold. Kelley, who claimed to converse with angels, failed—but left behind encrypted manuscripts that still fascinate researchers today.
When Rudolf died in 1612, his collection was scattered. Some works, deemed too "demonic," were destroyed. Others, like Arcimboldo’s paintings, were hidden in storerooms, where they waited centuries to be rediscovered. Yet their message endured. Even today, when one gazes upon The Garden of Earthly Delights or Melencolia I, one hears an echo of those Prague nights when, between alchemical experiments, artists and scholars dreamed of transforming the world.
