Bruno Munari never liked labels. Born in 1907 in a still-rural Italy, he spent the 20th century juggling artistic movements like one changes shirts—from the rowdy futurism of his twenties to the streamlined industrial design of his maturity. But it was in the 1950s, as Italy was barely recovering from the war and discovering the miracles of consumer society, that he would invent something radically new: an art that functioned like a machine, but a machine whose only purpose was to make us smile.
His Macchine Inutili (Useless Machines), created as early as the 1930s, were the direct ancestors of Arte Programmata. These assemblies of wood, metal, and wire, set in motion by small motors or simply by the wind, spun, swayed, and fluttered with no other function than to exist. Munari, with his typically Italian irony, presented them as parodies of the industrial machines then invading the landscape. "A machine that serves no purpose is a perfect machine," he wrote. In a country that worshipped functional design—from Vespas to Olivetti typewriters—this provocation landed like a bomb.
But it was with the Negativo-Positivo that Munari would truly revolutionize our relationship with art. These perforated metal plates, first exhibited in 1952, played with light like a painter plays with color. Depending on the angle of illumination, the shadows cast on the wall formed patterns radically different from the perforations themselves. The effect was hypnotic: the work seemed to reinvent itself before your eyes. Munari, who had worked as a graphic designer for Campari and Pirelli, applied the principles of visual communication to art. Every hole, every line was calculated to create a dialogue between the material and the immaterial, between what you see and what you sense.
02Olivetti’s dream machine
If Arte Programmata was able to develop, it was largely thanks to an unlikely patron: the Olivetti company. In the 1950s, as the typewriter manufacturer dominated the global market, its boss Adriano Olivetti dreamed of creating a "corporate culture" that transcended mere industry. He hired architects like Le Corbusier to design his factories, poets like Franco Fortini to write his advertisements, and artists like Munari to imagine works that would humanize technology.
In 1962, Olivetti organized a groundbreaking exhibition in its Milan showroom on via Clerici. Titled Arte Programmata, it featured works by Munari, as well as Enzo Mari, Giovanni Anceschi, and other members of Gruppo T. The public discovered sculptures that turned, paintings that changed color with the light, modular structures that could be assembled and disassembled endlessly. Art was no longer a sacred object to be contemplated from afar, but an interactive system, almost a game.
Munari exhibited his Strutture Continue (Continuous Structures), plastic or metal modules that fit together like pieces of a giant puzzle. The idea was simple, almost childlike: to give the viewer the means to create their own work. But behind this apparent simplicity lay a profound reflection on the reproducibility of art. These structures, designed to be mass-produced, challenged the very notion of originality. "A Picasso painting is unique," Munari explained, "but a Struttura Continua can be assembled in a thousand different ways by a thousand different people. Who is the author? The designer or the assembler?"
03The art that speaks to the fingers
Among Munari’s most moving works are his Tavole Tattili (Tactile Tables), created in the 1960s. Designed for the blind, these wooden panels featured surfaces with varied textures—soft velvet, rough sandpaper, interwoven metal wires. Munari, who was always fascinated by the senses, wanted to prove that art could (and should) speak to everyone, not just those who see.
These tactile tables were more than just educational tools. They embodied a philosophy of art as a multisensory experience. Munari, who also designed children’s books and toys, believed that creativity was born from contact, exploration, play. His Libri Illeggibili (Unreadable Books), published as early as 1949, took this logic to the extreme: pages without text, where meaning emerged from shapes, colors, materials. For Munari, reading wasn’t just about deciphering words—it was about touching, feeling, handling.
This sensory approach found a particular echo in his Proiezioni Dirette (Direct Projections). At a time when experimental cinema was only beginning to explore the possibilities of light, Munari invented a simple but brilliant device: a slide projector equipped with rotating filters. By superimposing geometric shapes and playing with colors, he created light shows that transformed any wall into a living canvas. These projections, often presented in galleries or public spaces, foreshadowed digital art and interactive installations.
04The secret code of shadows
What fascinates about Munari’s work is this sense that there’s always something to discover, as if each piece hides a coded message. In 2020, researchers analyzed the patterns of the Strutture Continue and found binary sequences—a discovery that stunned the art world. Munari, who never used a computer, had he anticipated the digital age? Or was it just a coincidence, a mathematical game without deeper meaning?
This question of intention lies at the heart of Arte Programmata. Was Munari a visionary who foresaw the importance of algorithms in art, or simply a brilliant tinkerer who loved playing with forms and mechanisms? The answer might lie in his Macchine Inutili. These sculptures, which seem to have no function, are actually thinking machines. They force us to question our relationship with technology, the boundary between the useful and the useless, between beauty and function.
Take the Macchina Aritmica (Arhythmic Machine) from 1942. This small assembly of wood and metal, powered by a motor, turned irregularly, as if refusing to submit to the laws of mechanics. Munari designed it during the war, when machines were synonymous with destruction. By creating a "useless" machine, he posed a fundamental question: what if technology wasn’t just a tool of domination, but also a means of liberation, play, poetry?
05The legacy of a modest magician
Today, as digital art and NFTs dominate the conversation, Munari’s work feels more relevant than ever. His Strutture Continue inspired designers like Ettore Sottsass and architects like Zaha Hadid. His light projections prefigured the interactive installations of Rafael Lozano-Hemmer. His children’s books, translated worldwide, continue to delight young and old alike.
Yet Munari remains a discreet, almost secretive artist. Unlike his contemporaries like Lucio Fontana or Piero Manzoni, he never sought gratuitous provocation. His art was like him: intelligent, elegant, a little mischievous, but never pretentious. He preferred workshops to openings, experiments to manifestos.
Perhaps that’s why his influence runs so deep. Munari taught us that art doesn’t need to be serious to be profound, that a useless machine can be more poetic than a classical sculpture, that a dancing shadow on a wall can contain more truth than a realistic painting. In a world where everything seems programmed, calculated, optimized, his Arte Programmata reminds us of something essential: beauty often emerges where we least expect it.
06The last word of light
In 1997, a year before his death, Munari created one of his final works: a simple perforated metal plate, exposed to the raking light of a window. The shadows cast formed geometric patterns that seemed to float in space. Visitors who approached discovered that these patterns changed with their position, as if the work adapted to them.
It was pure Munari: an invitation to look differently, to play with perspectives, to find poetry in the simplest things. A lesson in humility, too, for this work, like all his others, didn’t claim to hold any absolute truth. It simply existed, danced with the light, and waited for someone, someday, to bring it to life.
