But what fascinated his visitors most was the strange machine he had cobbled together from pieces of wood and nylon thread: a device allowing painted glass plates to slide over one another, creating effects of superimposition and movement.
"Look closely," he would say, adjusting the plates with the precision of a watchmaker. "It’s not the eye that deceives, it’s the light that lies." And indeed, before our eyes, two static patterns suddenly seemed to come alive, as if an invisible hand were making them dance. It was 1937, long before the term "Op Art" existed, that Vasarely was already inventing kinetic art by accident. His famous Zebra, with its black and white stripes that seem to undulate, was only the first in a long series of optical experiments that would revolutionize our relationship with the image.
What made his approach unique was this unlikely alliance between mathematical rigor and visual poetry. Vasarely was not an engineer, but an artist who had studied medicine and attended the Hungarian Bauhaus. He knew the laws of Gestalt, those psychological principles that explain how our brain organizes shapes and colors. But he also knew that art cannot be reduced to equations. "A work must first be beautiful," he would repeat to his assistants. "The illusions come afterward."
02The war of illusions: when Paris became the battlefield of modern art
The 1950s were a time of consecration, but also of aesthetic quarrels that shook the art world. In 1955, the Denise René gallery organized Le Mouvement, an exhibition that officially marked the birth of kinetic art. Vasarely presented his first "plastic" works, modular compositions where geometric shapes fit together like pieces of an infinite puzzle. Alongside him, Jean Tinguely exhibited his absurd machines that destroyed themselves, while Yaacov Agam proposed transformable paintings where the patterns changed depending on the viewing angle.
For the first time, the Parisian public discovered that art could move—or at least give the illusion of movement. The critics were divided. Some saw a revolution comparable to that of Impressionism. Others, like Germain Bazin, curator of the Louvre, denounced "a visual scam that has nothing to do with real painting." The debate raged in the cafés of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, where Sartre and Beauvoir came to observe these new works that defied traditional categories.
Vasarely, for his part, remained serene. He had already understood that his true audience was not in museums, but in the street. In 1958, he exhibited his first Vega works for the first time, compositions where distorted grids seemed to curve under the effect of an invisible force. Visitors had the impression of looking through an optical lens, as if the canvas had become a window open to a curved space. Some even reported sensations of vertigo, as if the ground were giving way beneath their feet.
"Art must leave the galleries," he told Denise René. "It must invade the walls of cities, the façades of buildings, the objects of everyday life." This utopian vision would soon materialize, but not without a few legal and artistic battles.
03The plastic alphabet: when Vasarely invented a new visual language
In the early 1960s, Vasarely took a decisive step by developing what he called his "Plastic Alphabet." The idea was simple, almost childlike: to create a system of basic shapes and colors that, when combined, could generate an infinite number of compositions. Like a composer using the same notes to write different symphonies, Vasarely imagined a universal visual language, accessible to all.
His studio became a true image factory. Assistants cut hundreds of geometric shapes—squares, circles, diamonds—from cardboard or plastic. These "plastic units" were then assembled according to precise rules, like the letters of an alphabet. The result? Works that seemed both familiar and mysterious, as if they contained a secret code.
"Look at this canvas," he explained, pointing to Folklore Planétaire (1967). "It is built from only six basic shapes and twelve colors. Yet it can generate thousands of variations. It’s as if each viewer sees a different work." This systematic approach fascinated as much as it disturbed. Some saw it as a form of dehumanization of art. Others, like the critic Pierre Restany, hailed "a revolution comparable to that of Gutenberg."
But Vasarely did not stop there. He wanted his alphabet to become a true language, capable of applying to all areas of creation. In 1965, he published his Notes for a Manifesto, where he laid out his theory of "plastic unity": a vision where art, architecture, and design would merge into one. For him, a building, an advertising poster, or a painting should obey the same aesthetic principles. "Beauty has no borders," he wrote. "It must be everywhere, for everyone."
This philosophy led him to collaborate with architects, designers, and even industrialists. In 1968, he created the official posters for the Mexico City Olympics, where his geometric patterns came alive under the stadium’s spotlights. In 1972, he designed a massive fresco for the RTL headquarters in Luxembourg, turning a simple office wall into an optical experience. Wherever he went, Vasarely left his mark: a visual grammar that defied time and space.
04The walls that breathe: when art escaped the museums
If Vasarely is today considered one of the pioneers of kinetic art, it is perhaps less for his canvases than for his obsession with integrating art into public space. "A work should not be an object of passive contemplation," he said. "It must live with people, in their daily lives." This conviction led him to create some of his most ambitious—and controversial—works.
In 1976, he inaugurated the Vasarely Foundation in Aix-en-Provence, a building designed as a total work of art. Imagine a giant cube, striped with black and white bands, where each room is a visual experience. The walls seem to curve, the floors play with perspective, and the stained glass projects moving patterns onto the visitors. For Vasarely, this was the realization of his dream: a place where art and architecture merged, where every detail was designed to awaken the senses.
But this integration of art into urban space did not come without friction. In 1972, when he presented his project for the RTL headquarters in Luxembourg, some employees complained of headaches when looking at the geometric fresco adorning their workplace. "It’s too aggressive," they said. "We feel like the walls are moving." Vasarely, amused, replied: "That’s exactly the effect I wanted. Art must provoke a reaction, even a physical one."
This anecdote reveals a fundamental truth about his work: his pieces were not made for passive contemplation. They demanded active participation from the viewer. Whether walking in front of a mural or turning around a Plexiglas sculpture, the visitor became an actor in the work. "Kinetic art is like a dance," he explained. "The viewer and the work must respond to each other, provoke each other, intoxicate each other."
This interactive approach would inspire an entire generation of artists, from Julio Le Parc’s light installations to teamLab’s immersive environments. But it also raised a fundamental question: how far can one push the illusion of movement without losing the viewer along the way?
05Vertigo and ecstasy: when the eye loses its bearings
There is something almost sadistic in some of Vasarely’s works. As if the artist took malicious pleasure in playing with our perceptions, in making us doubt what we see. Take Vega-Nor (1969), for example: a canvas where black and white squares seem to distort, as if seen through a warped lens. At the center, a circle appears to float in space, as if sucked into a black hole. Some viewers report a sensation of vertigo, as if the ground were giving way beneath their feet. Others close their eyes, unable to bear this hypnotic dance any longer.
It is no coincidence that psychologists took a keen interest in his work. In the 1960s, neuroscientists used his canvases to study the mechanisms of perception. How does our brain interpret these illusions? Why do certain combinations of colors and shapes provoke physical sensations? Vasarely, for his part, remained discreet on these questions. "I am not a scientist," he said. "I am an artist exploring the limits of vision."
Yet his works sometimes seemed designed like laboratory experiments. In Supernovae (1959-61), concentric spirals give the impression of turning on themselves, like an expanding galaxy. Visitors often feel as if the patterns are moving, even though the canvas remains perfectly still. "It’s your brain that creates the movement," Vasarely explained. "The work is just a trigger."
This almost scientific dimension of his work earned him as many admirers as detractors. Some critics accused him of reducing art to a mere visual experiment, devoid of emotional depth. Others, like the philosopher Jean-Louis Schefer, saw it as a fascinating exploration of human subjectivity. "Vasarely does not paint objects," Schefer wrote. "He paints the way we perceive them."
This ambiguity is perhaps what makes his work so captivating. His canvases do not tell stories, do not represent landscapes, do not seek to move in the traditional sense. They exist in an intermediate space, between science and poetry, between reality and illusion. And it is precisely this indeterminacy that continues to fascinate viewers, sixty years after their creation.
06The invisible legacy: when Vasarely colonized the world without anyone noticing
If you have ever looked at a 1970s advertising poster, admired the geometric patterns of a contemporary rug, or played a video game with psychedelic graphics, you have probably encountered Vasarely’s influence without knowing it. His genius was to make his art so omnipresent that it became almost invisible—like the air we breathe.
Take corporate logos. In the 1960s and 70s, IBM, Renault, and even the Mexico City Olympics adopted his geometric motifs. His compositions became a universal language, instantly understood by all. "Good design should be like a mathematical equation," he said. "Simple, elegant, and immediately comprehensible."
But his influence did not stop there. In fashion, designers like Pierre Cardin and Paco Rabanne drew inspiration from his patterns to create futuristic collections. In architecture, buildings like the Vasarely Foundation or the RTL headquarters in Luxembourg showed how art could transform urban space. Even cinema embraced his ideas: the psychedelic sets of 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) or the animated sequences of Yellow Submarine (1968) owe much to his research on perception.
Today, in the digital age, his legacy is more alive than ever. Artists working with artificial intelligence or virtual reality often cite Vasarely as a major influence. "He understood before anyone else that art could be algorithmic," explains Refik Anadol, whose digital installations play with data and optical illusions. "His works are like visual programs—they contain rules that generate infinite forms."
Even the world of NFTs and generative art owes him a debt. Platforms like Art Blocks, which create unique works from algorithms, directly reprise his idea of a digital plastic alphabet. "Vasarely invented the concept of programmable art," says Erick Calderon, founder of Art Blocks. "Without him, we might never have imagined that art could be both unique and reproducible."
Yet, despite this colossal influence, Vasarely remains a paradoxical artist. Adored by the general public, sometimes scorned by the artistic elite, he embodies the permanent tension between popular art and the avant-garde. "I don’t seek to make art for museums," he said. "I want to create images that live in the real world, that accompany people in their daily lives."
07The work that watches you: when the viewer becomes an accomplice
There is one Vasarely canvas, Vega 200 (1968), that encapsulates all the magic and mystery of his art. Imagine a perfect square, divided into a grid of small black and white squares. At the center, a circle seems to float, as if sucked into a black hole. But what fascinates most is this strange sensation that the work observes you as much as you observe it.
Move closer, and the patterns seem to distort. Step back, and the illusion fades. Tilt your head, and the squares appear to dance.
