The paintings depicted allegorical scenes—Prometheus stealing fire from the gods, Nature personified as a nurturing mother—giving the cabinet a spiritual dimension. Here, classification was not scientific: it was poetic.
Elsewhere, as in the cabinet of Athanasius Kircher, a seventeenth-century Jesuit, objects were organized to prove the harmony between faith and reason. An Egyptian mummy stood beside an astrolabe, an obelisk next to a microscope. Kircher saw in these juxtapositions proof that God had inscribed His laws in nature, and that man, by discovering them, drew closer to the divine. The forgers knew this well, flooding the market with fabricated "wonders." Their talent? Making the false seem truer than the true.
