Prices soar: in 1923, a loaf of bread costs 200 billion marks. Amid this chaos, a 36-year-old architect, Walter Gropius, dreams of a new world. His manifesto, published in April 1919, rings like a declaration of war on academism: "The ultimate aim of all creative activity is building!" No hierarchy between the arts, no distinction between artist and artisan. Just one obsession: to create objects that are beautiful, useful, and accessible to all.
What followed in just fourteen years—before the Nazis shut the school in 1933—was far more than an artistic movement. It was a complete overhaul of our relationship with the everyday, where every object, every building, every poster became a link in an invisible chain connecting man to his environment. What if the Bauhaus hadn’t just changed design, but also the way we think?
01The revolution begins in a weaving workshop
Anni Albers was 23 when she walked through the doors of the Bauhaus in 1922. She dreamed of painting, but was steered toward the weaving workshop—"more suitable for women," she was told. She would stay for eleven years, transforming what was considered a minor craft into an art form in its own right. At her loom, she didn’t see threads but equations: "A fabric is a system of tensions," she wrote. Her creations, like the Wall Hanging of 1926 with its geometric patterns that seem to float between abstraction and architecture, became silent manifestos.
Yet behind this apparent rigor lay a wild freedom. Students experimented with improbable materials: cellophane, metallic threads, even strips of newspaper. "We weren’t weaving fabrics, but ideas," Anni would later confess. Her work would influence generations of designers, from Jack Lenor Larsen to Sheila Hicks. The irony of history: what was meant to be a dead end for the women of the Bauhaus became one of its most enduring legacies.
This anecdote speaks volumes about the spirit of the Bauhaus. Here, they didn’t train artists but "builders"—individuals capable of conceiving an object in its entirety, from the initial sketch to mass production. What if this interdisciplinary approach was precisely what our hyper-specialized era lacks?
02Light as the primary material
László Moholy-Nagy arrived at the Bauhaus in 1923, and with him came an obsession: light. For this sharp-eyed Hungarian, it wasn’t just illumination but a material to be sculpted. In his metal workshop, he created objects that seemed to defy the laws of physics. His Light-Space Modulator (1922–1930), a machine of perforated metal disks and electric motors, cast moving shadows that danced on the walls like mechanical ghosts. "Light demands space, and space demands light," he wrote.
Moholy-Nagy took the experiment further with his photograms—images made by placing objects directly onto photosensitive paper, without a camera. The result? Abstract compositions where keys, glasses, or fragments of metal became mysterious constellations. "Photography is not a mirror, but a hammer," he declared. For him, the camera was meant to reveal the invisible, not reproduce the visible.
This fascination with light would infect the entire school. Architects like Gropius, in his Dessau building (1925–1926), designed spaces where natural light became a structural element. Glass walls, ribbon windows, suspended staircases—everything was conceived so light could flow freely, like a living material. Today, when you step into a New York loft or a Google office, you’re seeing Moholy-Nagy’s legacy. Light is no longer an accessory—it has become the soul of places.
03The chair that defied gravity
In 1925, Marcel Breuer, then 23, looked at his bicycle and had a revelation. Why not use the same tubular steel to make furniture? "Steel tubes are light, strong, and can be mass-produced," he explained. Thus was born the Wassily Chair, named in honor of his friend Wassily Kandinsky. With its clean lines and taut leather seat, the chair seemed to defy gravity. "It floats," Breuer would later say.
What struck people about this piece was its technical boldness. The chrome-plated steel frame, welded in one piece, was a feat for the time. Traditional craftsmen sneered: "A chair must have wooden legs, not metal!" Yet the Wassily Chair would become an icon of modern design. Today, it appears in museums (MoMA, Centre Pompidou) as well as the most contemporary interiors.
But beyond its form, this chair embodied the Bauhaus ideal: an object that was beautiful, functional, and reproducible. "We don’t want luxury furniture for a few, but durable furniture for all," Gropius declared. This philosophy would inspire generations of designers, from Eero Saarinen to Philippe Starck. What if true luxury, in the end, was simplicity?
04When architecture becomes a dance
Oskar Schlemmer was not an architect but a painter and choreographer. Yet it was he who gave the Bauhaus its most poetic dimension with his Triadisches Ballett (1922). On stage, dancers in geometric costumes—cylinders, spheres, cones—moved like mechanical marionettes. "The human body is a system of perfect proportions," he explained. "Why not treat it as mobile architecture?"
This approach would influence the entire school. The Bauhaus buildings, like the one in Dessau, were not mere structures but "machines for living" (to borrow Le Corbusier’s phrase). Staircases seemed to float, ribbon windows created plays of shadow and light, primary colors (red, yellow, blue) punctuated the space like musical notes. "A house must be like a score," Gropius wrote. "Every element has its place, its rhythm, its function."
Today, when you visit the Bauhaus in Dessau, you feel this almost musical harmony. Red doors lead to offices, blue to workshops, yellow to dormitories. Each color has a purpose, each angle a reason. What if our cities were designed like ballets rather than stacks of concrete?
05The typography that changed how we read
Herbert Bayer arrived at the Bauhaus in 1921, at 21. He would leave with an obsession: to revolutionize writing. At the time, typefaces were still inherited from the 19th century—heavy serifs, pompous capitals. Bayer proposed a radical alternative: a "universal" typography, sans-serif and lowercase only. "Why waste space with useless capitals?" he asked. "A letter must be clear, legible, and economical."
His typeface, simply called Universal, would become the matrix of all modern typography. Today, when you read an Apple sign or a subway poster, you’re seeing Bayer’s legacy. But his influence went further. With his Bauhaus posters, he invented a new visual grammar: contrast, asymmetry, bold use of white space. "A poster must hit like a punch," he declared.
This approach would inspire the Swiss Style of the 1950s and later digital design in the 2000s. When you use an Apple or Google interface, you’re navigating a world shaped by Bayer. Typography was no longer just a tool—it had become a universal language.
06The exile that saved the Bauhaus
The Nazis seized power. The Bauhaus, deemed "degenerate" and "Bolshevik," was shut down. Its masters scattered into exile: Gropius went to the United States, where he would teach at Harvard; Mies van der Rohe settled in Chicago; Moholy-Nagy founded the New Bauhaus in Chicago in 1937. "Art cannot be destroyed," the latter wrote. "It moves, like a flame.".
This exile would paradoxically save the Bauhaus. In the United States, its ideas would infect an entire generation of designers. Charles and Ray Eames, for example, applied Bauhaus principles to their plywood furniture. "The Bauhaus taught us to think of the object as a system," Charles said. Even the IBM logo, created by Paul Rand in 1972, owes much to Bauhaus aesthetics.
Today, the Bauhaus is everywhere—in the clean lines of your iPhone, the open-plan offices, the typefaces in your books. "The Bauhaus hasn’t disappeared," wrote historian Frederic J. Schwartz. "It has dissolved into the world." What if the Bauhaus’s greatest achievement was making its ideas so natural that we no longer notice them?
07The Bauhaus today: a legacy to reinvent
In 2019, the Bauhaus celebrated its centenary. Exhibitions around the world honored its legacy. Yet a question lingers: is the Bauhaus still relevant? Its critics accuse it of cold functionalism, disdain for ornament, even naive utopianism. "The Bauhaus created beautiful objects but inhuman spaces," wrote architect Peter Zumthor.
Yet in a world saturated with disposable objects and superficial design, the Bauhaus spirit has never been more necessary. Its obsession with sustainability, its rejection of the superfluous, its interdisciplinary approach—these are lessons for our time. "The Bauhaus reminds us that design is not a matter of style, but of ethics," says designer Hella Jongerius.
Today, schools like the MIT Media Lab or the École Camondo in Paris have adopted its methods: collaborative workshops, concrete projects, blending disciplines. Even tech giants like Google and Apple draw on its principles. "The Bauhaus invented design thinking before its time," notes Tim Brown, CEO of IDEO.
So, is the Bauhaus dead? No. It has simply changed form. Like a seed planted a century ago, it continues to grow, invisible but omnipresent. What if the next design revolution comes from those who know how to reinvent its legacy?
