Born around 1415 in the small town of Borgo San Sepolcro—now Sansepolcro—he grew up in a family of merchants and tanners, a world where one learned early to count, to measure, to assess. Here, between 1452 and 1466, Piero created his absolute masterpiece: The Legend of the True Cross, a cycle of frescoes telling the miraculous story of the wood used in Christ’s crucifixion.

The colors, of an almost unreal softness, create an atmosphere of absolute serenity: deep blues like the Umbrian night, earthy reds evoking the dust of roads, pale greens recalling the first buds of spring.
But it is in the details that Piero’s genius reveals itself. Look, for example, at The Discovery and Proof of the True Cross: the Roman soldiers, dressed in tunics with impeccably calculated folds, seem sculpted from stone rather than painted. Their faces, of an almost inhuman beauty, express intense concentration, as if they were solving a mystery far greater than themselves. And then there is that light—that golden light bathing the entire scene, as if the sun itself had chosen to rest upon these walls.

The faces of the sleeping soldiers, bathed in a golden glow, seem almost translucent, as if made of wax rather than flesh. And then there is that sky—that deep blue, almost violet sky that seems to stretch into infinity, far beyond the edges of the painting.

Today, more than five centuries after his death, Piero della Francesca’s work continues to fascinate and inspire. His geometric approach to painting influenced generations of artists, from Cubists like Picasso to Minimalists like Agnes Martin. His treatises on perspective laid the foundations for modern optical science. And above all, his unique way of representing the world—with both scientific precision and spiritual depth—makes him one of the most original artists in the history of art.
Yet for centuries, Piero remained in the shadow of his contemporaries. Vasari, in his Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects, described him as a talented but overly cold, overly mathematical artist. It was only in the 20th century, thanks to the work of historians like Roberto Longhi, that his genius was fully recognized. Today, his paintings hang in the world’s greatest museums, and thousands of visitors flock each year to admire his frescoes in Arezzo and Sansepolcro.
But beyond academic recognition, what makes Piero’s work so precious is its ability to move us even today, in an era when art often seems reduced to abstract concepts or fleeting provocations.
