Resin, the material that defies time: Between eternity and fragility
Imagine an autumn morning in London, 1993. A Victorian house stands, seemingly intact, in the middle of a working-class neighbourhood in the throes of change. Yet something is off: the windows are blind, the doors sealed. This is no ordinary home, but a monumental sculpture by Rachel Whiteread, House—a concrete cast of the interior of a dwelling soon to be demolished. A few weeks later, under the protests of local residents and the flash of photographers’ cameras, the crane moves in. The house is torn down. All that remains is a yellowed photograph and, in the museum’s storage, a smaller sibling of this ephemeral work: Ghost, a translucent resin capturing the imprint of a Victorian parlour, like a spectre frozen in amber.

01When resin reinvents the history of art
The story of resin in art began long before artists claimed it. Everything changed in the 1930s, when two Swiss chemists, Pierre Castan and S.O. Greenlee, developed the first epoxy resins. Originally, these materials were designed for industry: ultra-strong adhesives, aircraft coatings, electrical insulators. But by the 1950s, artists like Jasper Johns sensed the potential of these new substances. In his New York studio, Johns experimented with polyester resins to create multiples—serial works, like his famous Painted Bronze (1960), bronze beer cans… moulded from resin.
Why such enthusiasm? Because resin offers what traditional materials cannot: the ability to imitate, transform, preserve anything. It flows into moulds with surgical precision, takes on the brightest colours, can be as transparent as glass or as opaque as stone. Above all, it allows artists to play with time. An artist can freeze a moment—a gesture, a shape, a texture—in a material that seems to defy wear. Yet this illusion of eternity is deceptive. As the MoMA curator Ann Temkin reminds us: "Resin is a paradoxical material. It promises immortality, but often proves more fragile than marble or bronze."
02Rachel Whiteread and the art of capturing absence
If one name embodies this duality, it is Rachel Whiteread. Her work Ghost (1990) is a masterpiece of subtlety: a translucent resin cast from the interior walls of a London parlour, capturing every detail—the mouldings, the electrical sockets, the flaking paint. What is represented is not the room itself, but its negative, its absence. As if the artist had sucked the soul from the space and returned it as a spectre.
The technique is as simple as it is brilliant. Whiteread begins by constructing a plaster mould, which she applies meticulously to the surfaces to be reproduced. She then pours in polyurethane resin, which hardens within hours. The result is both familiar and unsettling. "It’s as if you’re looking at a room through tinted glass, or standing in a dream where everything is both real and unreal," explains a visitor to the National Gallery of Art, where the work is displayed.
Yet Ghost has not always been so serene. When it was created, the work sparked heated debates. Some critics saw it as a celebration of memory, others as a form of architectural voyeurism. But it was its fragility that most concerned conservators. Polyurethane resin, though durable, is sensitive to humidity and temperature fluctuations. "We have to constantly monitor micro-cracks," confides a museum restorer. "A work like Ghost isn’t made to last forever. It carries its own disappearance within it."
03Damien Hirst and the myth of immortality
While Whiteread explores resin as a means of capturing the ephemeral, Damien Hirst turns it into a symbol of our obsession with immortality. His most famous work, The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living (1991), perfectly illustrates this: a 4.3-metre tiger shark preserved in a formaldehyde-filled tank. Yet behind this appearance of perfect preservation lies a far less glorious reality.
The original shark, caught in Australia, began to decompose in 2004. Hirst had to replace it with a new specimen, sparking outrage among purists. "It’s as if the work itself reminds us that nothing is eternal, not even art," observes art critic Sarah Thornton. "Hirst plays with the idea of death, but also with that of falsification. After all, it’s not the real shark on display, but a copy. As if art were merely an illusion of permanence."
Formaldehyde, often mistaken for resin, is actually just a preservative. But Hirst pushed the experiment further with works like For the Love of God (2007), a human skull encrusted with 8,601 diamonds, cast in resin. Here, resin is no longer just a material, but a symbol of luxury and vanity. "This is a work about our desire to possess, to preserve, to turn death into a consumer object," explains philosopher Arthur Danto.
04Resin in the studio: between magic and chemistry
Behind these spectacular works lies a process that is both scientific and artisanal. In her Paris studio, artist Sophie Calle has long worked with epoxy resins for her installations. "It’s a temperamental material," she admits. "You have to respect precise drying times, control the temperature, avoid air bubbles. One mistake, and the work is ruined."
Epoxy resin, the most commonly used in art, consists of two components: a resin and a hardener. When mixed, they trigger a chemical reaction that transforms the liquid into a solid. But this alchemy has its limits. "If you add too much pigment, the resin won’t harden properly," explains a supplier of artistic materials. "If you work in humid conditions, it can turn cloudy. And if you don’t protect it from UV light, it yellows within years."
Yet these constraints have not deterred artists. On the contrary, they have inspired innovative techniques. American artist Tara Donovan, for example, uses thousands of plastic cups assembled with resin to create sculptures evoking geological formations. "Resin allows me to transform an ordinary object into something magical," she says. "It’s like giving a second life to materials destined for the trash."
05The paradox of conservation: when art refuses to age
While resin captivates artists, it gives conservators cold sweats. Unlike bronze or marble, which age gracefully, resin does not. It yellows, cracks, peels. "It’s a nightmare for museums," admits a restorer at the Centre Pompidou. "A resin work can seem perfect for ten years, then deteriorate suddenly. And once damaged, it’s often impossible to repair."
Take Claes Oldenburg’s Soft Toilet (1966), a vinyl and resin sculpture of a sagging toilet bowl. For decades, the work travelled from museum to museum, until conservators at the Whitney noticed worrying cracks. "The vinyl had hardened, and the resin was starting to peel," recounts an expert. "We had to restore it urgently, using special products to prevent it from disintegrating completely."
Faced with these challenges, museums have had to adapt. Today, resin works are stored in climate-controlled rooms. Some, like Neri Oxman’s masks, are even kept in nitrogen atmospheres to prevent oxidation. "We’ve moved from passive conservation to active conservation," explains a specialist. "It’s no longer just about preserving the work, but monitoring it constantly, like a patient in intensive care."
06Resin in the digital age: when art becomes programmable
If resin was once a material of preservation, it is now at the heart of the digital revolution. With the advent of 3D printing, artists can create forms impossible to achieve with traditional techniques. Neri Oxman, director of the Mediated Matter Group at MIT, is a pioneer of this new era. Her Vespers (2016), a series of 3D-printed death masks, blends resin, pigments, and even living cells.
"Resin is no longer just a material, it’s a programmable medium," explains Oxman. "We can now design works that evolve over time, that react to light, temperature, or even humidity. This is a new form of art, where the boundary between the living and the inanimate blurs."
This approach opens dizzying possibilities. What if, tomorrow, a resin sculpture could grow like a plant? What if it could repair itself? Researchers are already working on self-healing resins, capable of filling their own cracks. "We are on the cusp of a new era," predicts Oxman. "One day, works of art will no longer be static objects, but living organisms."
07The future of resin: between ecology and ethics
Yet this technological revolution raises ethical and ecological questions. Resin, derived from petroleum, is a polluting material, difficult to recycle. "We face a paradox," acknowledges Dutch artist Daan Roosegaarde. "On one hand, resin allows us to create extraordinary works. On the other, it contributes to the environmental crisis."
In response to this contradiction, some artists are turning to more sustainable alternatives. Bio-resins, made from algae or corn, are gaining popularity. "They’re less durable than traditional resins, but they have the advantage of being biodegradable," explains a manufacturer. Others, like Studio Drift, use recycled resins, made from plastic waste.
But the debate goes further. Should we continue to create resin works when we know they won’t last? "Art doesn’t need to be eternal to be beautiful," responds Sophie Calle. "Sometimes, it’s even its fragility that makes it precious. Like a wilting flower, a resin work carries its own end within it. And perhaps that is its greatest strength."
08Epilogue: resin, a mirror of our time
Ultimately, resin is far more than just a material. It is a reflection of our era—its contradictions, its hopes, its fears. It embodies our desire to preserve, control, immortalise everything—and at the same time, our growing awareness that nothing is eternal.
Perhaps that is why we are so fascinated by it. Because it reminds us that art, like life, is a fragile balance between creation and destruction, memory and oblivion. And that sometimes, the most beautiful works are those that accept their own disappearance.
