Artificial intelligence, in its current usage, refers to a set of computer programmes capable of performing tasks that until recently required human intelligence. Understanding a question asked in everyday language, formulating a coherent response, identifying an intention behind a request, analysing a document to extract relevant information: all these operations can now be carried out by software. This is not intelligence in the sense that a human is intelligent. The machine does not think, does not feel, has no consciousness.
